Reduction of marine litter through behavioural change
Portugal

Marine litter, behavioral change, and ocean literacy. Development of ocean literacy materials for children (e.g., books and mini games) and a program with ocean literacy actions to be implemented in schools (co-developed with teachers).
Main Target
Reduction of marine litter
Transformative Impact
The impact of the demo will be described at the end of the project implementation. During the implementation of the project in a specific area some intermediary results will be delivered, and all these results will be published to support the dissemination and the sustainability of the project.
Implemented Actions

Integration and leveraging of existing marine litter related activities at the DEMO-PT living lab to maximize synergies and avoid competition
Existing initiatives of marine litter collection were mapped and promoted through A-AAGORA communication channels. Collaborations with volunteer-led cleanups removed debris from the lagoon, restored ecological quality, and raised public awareness about marine pollution impacts.

Develops ocean literacy skills - Art with marine litter
Educational art sessions invited students to creatively reuse marine litter collected along the coastline, transforming waste materials into meaningful pieces of art and reinforcing the value of protecting coastal ecosystems.

Develops ocean literacy skills - Educational resources
A children's book, "Explore the Ocean with Clio," was developed in collaboration with CLIMAREST. Reading sessions in schools introduced young learners to marine biodiversity and the importance of preserving ocean ecosystems.

Develops ocean literacy skills - Digital games
Classroom sessions showcased educational mini-games that promote ocean literacy and sustainable practices related to marine and coastal environments, giving students hands-on experience with interactive learning tools.

Develops ocean literacy skills - Workshops and interactive sessions
Researchers partnered with local schools to deliver workshops throughout the academic year, raising awareness about marine litter challenges and the community's role in protecting coastal ecosystems.

Develop a Maptionnaire support for citizens engagement and support Ecosystem-based management
Workshops with key stakeholders identified replication areas across Portugal's Centro Region, using Maptionnaire to discuss the Reduction of Marine Litter through Behavioural Change solution and gather community input.
